Karbonfangst og -lagring (CCS)
Aker BP is evaluating opportunities for CO₂ storage on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) primarily as a potential new growth opportunity, but also as a means to support Europe’s decarbonization efforts.
Aker BP is the operator of two CCS licenses (EXL011 Atlas and EXL005 Poseidon) and a partner on a third (EXL013 Forsete) on the NCS.
Our CCS priorities
Aker BP’s CCS activities currently have three focus areas.
- Firstly, we are capturing high-quality subsurface opportunities and assessing their suitability for CO₂ storage through detailed subsurface studies.
- Secondly, we are evaluating field development concepts to mature projects towards development decisions.
- Thirdly, we are building strong partnerships across the CCS value chain to develop a viable business model, while working with industry and authorities to ensure a regulatory and fiscal framework that appropriately reflects the risk level of CCS.

Strategic partnership with Höegh Evi
Aker BP has a strategic partnership with Höegh Evi to develop a comprehensive CO2 transport and storage solution for industrial CO2 emitters in Europe.
This collaboration combines the companies’ respective strengths, expertise and technologies to enable collection, conditioning, transport, and secure injection of CO2 for permanent storage in subsea reservoirs on the NCS.
Project Atlas – CCS infrastructure for Europe’s net-zero future
Aker BP and Höegh Evi are maturing a CCS value chain named Project Atlas.
- Atlas is a flexible, innovate, scalable and cost-effective CO2 transport and storage solution.
- The project recently received the STEP Seal by the European Commission, recognition of quality and innovation aspects of the Atlas project. Atlas is also included on the European Commission’s 2025 list of PCI/PMI projects.
- Subject to final investment decision, tentatively in 2027, operations are planned to begin in 2030.
Project Poseidon – CO2 storage strategically located in Southern North Sea
- In addition to Atlas, Aker BP is also operator of the EXL005 Poseidon CO2 storage site, located strategically in the Southern North Sea, close to the Danish border.
- The Poseidon project is being considered for CO2 storage development with a similar concept as the Atlas Project.
