Great experiences and important messages at Oilers’ first home games

When Stavanger Oilers played their first two home games of the season, it was about more than what happened on the ice. Together with Aker BP, Oilers invited children from Stavanger Ski Club and young people from Frøyland secondary school to enjoy sport, community, and meaningful conversations.

Sporting joy that lasts

Through the Sports Initiative, Aker BP and Stavanger Oilers aim to help as many children and young people as possible remain in grassroots sports for as long as possible. Last weekend, a group from Stavanger Ski Club experienced the excitement and atmosphere at DNB Arena. They were welcomed with pizza, soft drinks, and their own T-shirts, and had the opportunity to meet both Oilers players and chairman Tore Christiansen.

– What an event they got to take part in! Here, they met enthusiasts who introduced hockey to a group where few had attended a game before, says Tonje Idland from Aker BP.

For many, this was their first encounter with ice hockey. The aim is for shared experiences like these to strengthen the sense of community and create even more sporting joy within the group.

Good choices and postponed alcohol debut

On Saturday, it was the turn of students from Frøyland secondary school. They watched Oilers win over Storhamar and were invited through the initiative “Keep the cap on”. Before the game, they attended an inspiring talk about making positive life choices, community, and the importance of postponing the introduction to alcohol. The students also received their own hoodies as a memento of the visit.

The event was very well received.

– Both teachers and students were absolutely delighted. Thank you so much for coming, and for spending time on this important work. It is encouraging and inspiring that Oilers contribute in this way in the local community, says Karl Inge Aksnes, headteacher at Frøyland secondary school.

Through the collaboration with Stavanger Oilers, Aker BP aims to create positive meeting places and contribute to safety, belonging, and valuable experiences for children and young people in the local community. The first two home games demonstrated what can be achieved when business, schools, and sport work together.
