Aker BP shall avoid harm to the environment by contributing to the development of environmental studies and knowledge-based solutions. We shall contribute to reducing the risk of any adverse effects on the environment as much as possible.
Nature provides us with food, energy and medicine. Aker BP’s approach is that the company shall show consideration for the balance of nature and maintain biological diversity. Mapping and monitoring constitute vital parts of this work.
Mapping of corals and sponges
The Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea constitute habitats of corals and sponges vulnerable to sedimentation caused by e.g., cuttings. Consequently, Aker BP places great emphasis on the mapping of such resources prior to exploration drilling, thus ensuring that the drill site, the placing of the drilling rig’s anchor lines, and handling of cuttings result in the minimum amount of damage.
In connection with preparations for a drilling operation on the Ulvetanna prospect A defined volume that has been mapped where it is probable that hydrocarbons are present. in the North Sea, Aker BP has carried out substantial mapping of the seabed.
This has included mapping of sediments and dredge surveys to identify the population of fish (sandeel) in the area. The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research has taken part in this work.
Aker BP shall avoid harming the environment through implementing energy efficiency measures and reduce emissions to air.
Emissions to air in this context are linked to the use of diesel on the drilling rigs. Aker BP is a member of the business sector’s NOx fund. Through contributions to the NOx fund, the company also helps to make funds available for measures aimed at reducing emissions across industries, and in shipping and fisheries.
Aker BP shall avoid harm to the environment by reducing the amount of chemicals used and by phasing out environmentally harmful chemicals or chemicals hazardous to health.
The world’s most extensive and advanced monitoring has not demonstrated any effect of discharge of produced water on fish, but adverse effects have been proven in laboratory tests. A precautionary approach involves reducing the amount of discharged produced water as much as possible.
Aker BP shall work to reduce the amount of waste and contribute to recycling, re-use and proper waste management.
